Honestly, I think the only real evidence of forsight and good thinking in the whole Katrina disaster has been that of Wal-mart and it's employees. The week before Katrina hit ground Wal-Marts in the gulf state areas stocked up with emergency supplies- water, batteries, canned food. The main distribution center for New Orleans-area stores had 42 trucks ready to be deployed at a time when FEMA was preparing agents for disaster relief deployment 2 and 7 days AFTER the hurricane. Wal-mart also secured a direct line of fuel so employees would be able to continue their work after the storm.
I always thought Wal-mart had questionable employment practices... and maybe they do. But between donating $15 million to disaster relief aid and offering to transfer displaced workers to other stores in the country it'll be kinda hard to be too critical on the company in the future.
I might as well take this opportunity to say that FEMA director, Michael D. Brown should totally be fired. After Karl Rowe, however, I doubt our vacation-prone president has the ability to fire one of his own.
